Booking choice: The Sintra, Regaleira and coast day trip, from $91 per person. Check dates Tour details
Quinta da Regaleira is about 30 km from central Lisbon, on the western edge of Sintra's historic centre. The train does most of the work; the rest is a walk through the village.
Times and fares below come from CP, the rail operator, the bus operator's sintra434.com and the estate's visitor page.
The quick answer
Take the CP train from Rossio station to Sintra: about 40 minutes, every 20 to 30 minutes, about EUR 2.50 one way on a navegante card. From Sintra station, walk 20 to 25 minutes through the village to Regaleira, or take bus 435. There is no parking at the estate. Doing it yourself costs about EUR 25 with the ticket; tours from Lisbon start at $34 for the seat alone.
What is the easiest way from Lisbon to Quinta da Regaleira?
The suburban train from Rossio to Sintra, then a walk. No booking, no traffic, about an hour door to gate.
Rossio station sits on the square of the same name in the Baixa, with its horseshoe doors. Trains on the Sintra line also stop at Entrecampos and Oriente, which helps if you are staying north of the centre. Sintra is the end of the line, so you cannot miss your stop.
Coming with the half day from Sintra? Get off one stop earlier, at Portela de Sintra, where the guide meets you.

How does the train from Rossio to Sintra work?
Trains leave every 20 to 30 minutes, take about 40 minutes and cost about EUR 2.50 one way, loaded onto a reusable navegante card.
Buy the card (EUR 0.50, once) at a machine or the counter, then load single trips or "zapping" credit, which comes out a little cheaper per ride. Each traveller needs their own card. Tickets cannot be booked ahead and you don't need them to be: just turn up.
The Lisboa Card covers this train, and so does a navegante monthly pass. Mornings from about 09:00 to 10:30 fill up with day-trippers, so expect to stand on a summer weekend. Check the current timetable on cp.pt.
Rather skip the train? Hotel pickup in Lisbon, 90 minutes at Regaleira, then Pena, Cabo da Roca and Cascais.
Check dates for the Sintra, Regaleira and coast day tripHow do you walk from Sintra station to Regaleira?
About 1.7 km, 20 to 25 minutes: down into the village, past the National Palace, then gently uphill along Rua Barbosa du Bocage.
From the station, follow the signs downhill to the historic centre along Volta do Duche. At the National Palace, the one with the two white conical chimneys, keep left and walk west on Rua Barbosa du Bocage. The road climbs slowly along Regaleira's high wall, and the gate is on the left. The official address is Quinta da Regaleira, 9, 2710-567 Sintra.
The pavement is narrow in places and shared with tuk-tuks. It is a pleasant walk all the same, and the village is where you will want lunch.

Should you take bus 435 to Regaleira?
Only if you also want Monserrate or Pena that day. Line 435 stops at Regaleira and runs about every 10 minutes; a 24-hour pass for lines 434 and 435 costs EUR 13.50 on board.
The two hop-on lines are run by Scotturb and sold as Sintra 434. Line 435 runs from the station through the centre to Quinta da Regaleira, Seteais and Monserrate. Line 434 climbs to the Moorish Castle and Pena. The shared 24-hour pass was EUR 13.50 on board and EUR 10.96 online in October 2026 (sintra434.com).
For Regaleira alone the bus saves you a 20-minute walk and costs more than the train. With Pena on the same day, the pass pays for itself on the hill.
Can you take an Uber or taxi from Lisbon to Regaleira?
Yes, about 30 to 45 minutes. Fares change with demand; expect roughly EUR 25 to EUR 40 one way and more at peak times. In the village, drivers must use set pick-up points.
Since 8 July 2026, Sintra's "Living and Visiting Sintra Village" plan has banned tour coaches from Volta do Duche and limited ride-hailing pick-ups and drop-offs to 12 designated points (NiT report). There is one near Regaleira, but on a busy day the car may set you down a short walk away. More in our post on the traffic plan.
Tuk-tuks wait in the village and will run you up to Regaleira or Pena. Agree the fare first.

Can you drive to Quinta da Regaleira and park?
You can drive to Sintra, but there is no parking at Regaleira. Leave the car at a car park outside the centre and walk or take the bus.
The estate says it plainly: no parking on site. The narrow roads around the historic centre clog in summer and on weekends, and the 2026 traffic plan pushes coaches and ride-hailing out of the village core. Sintra's municipal parking company lists the car parks, prices and live spaces at parking.sintra.pt. The large car parks by Portela de Sintra station are the usual choice: from there, take the train one stop to Sintra or walk 30 to 40 minutes.
Driving makes sense if you combine Regaleira with the coast: Cabo da Roca and Cascais are awkward by public transport.

Is a tour or doing it yourself cheaper?
Doing it yourself, by a wide margin: about EUR 25 per adult with the train and the ticket. Tours buy you transport, a guide, and the coast on the same day.
Per adult, with the Regaleira ticket counted in. Tour prices are USD from-prices; the cash part is paid in euros on the day.

The DIY route wins on price and on time inside. A tour wins when you want Pena, Cabo da Roca and Cascais in the same day without four changes of bus. Which tours actually take you in, and for how long: Sintra tours that include Regaleira.

Car and driver from your Lisbon hotel, two hours in the estate and the ticket already paid.
Explore the private Regaleira half day Tour detailsHow early should you leave Lisbon for your slot?
About 90 minutes before your slot time. The train and the walk take about 70 minutes; the rest is buffer.
For a 10:00 slot, aim for a train around 08:30. Regaleira gives you one hour of grace after the slot, so a missed train is not a disaster, but the last entry is 17:30 whatever your ticket says. Coming back, the last trains to Lisbon run late into the evening, so the closing time is your limit, not the timetable.
Not sure how long to stay? How long to spend at Regaleira has a route for two to three hours.
