Booking choice: The private Regaleira half day, from $111 per person. Check dates Tour details
The ticket to Quinta da Regaleira says it gives access to the areas open to the public, and that some may be closed or restricted. In 2026 that line matters. The Aquarium is shut for restoration, walking at the Waterfall Lake is banned, and the palace shows only its main floor.
None of this touches the reason most people come. The Initiation Well, the tunnels, the chapel and the gardens are all open. You just walk them in a set direction, and a guide cannot follow you into the well.
The quick answer
Closed in 2026: the Aquarium (conservation work, announced in April) and the Waterfall Lake path, so no crossing the stepping stones. The palace opens its main floor only, one way. The Initiation Well runs downhill only and the tunnel to the Eastern Grotto is one way. Still open: the well, the tunnels, the chapel, the gardens and this year's Camões exhibition.
Is the Aquarium at Quinta da Regaleira closed?
Yes. The foundation closed the Aquarium for conservation and restoration work in April 2026 and has not announced a reopening.
The official notice is short: the Aquarium is closed to the public while conservation and restoration work takes place. No end date is given, so treat it as closed for the rest of the year unless the notice changes.
The Aquarium is one of the estate's grottoes, a water chamber set into a boulder to look like a natural cave. It was once counted among the estate's great naturalist features, and it had been out of use and in poor repair for years. You lose one stop on the garden circuit. It is not one of the big three, and most visitors would not have planned around it.
Can you still cross the stepping stones at the Waterfall Lake?
No. The official rules say the Waterfall Path is closed; the Portuguese version bans walking at the Waterfall Lake altogether.
This is the closure people notice. The stepping stones across the Waterfall Lake were the classic exit from the tunnels and the photo everyone wanted. The English visiting rules now say "The Waterfall Path is closed". The Portuguese page is blunter: circulação proibida no Lago da Cascata, no walking at the Waterfall Lake.
You can still see the lake, the stones and the waterfall from the paths around it. The foundation can end the visit, without a refund, of anyone who ignores the rules. Take the picture from the bank.

Which one-way rules apply in the well, the tunnels and the palace?
The well is downhill only, the tunnel from the well to the Eastern Grotto is one way, and the palace has a single route.
These rules are about crowds. A spiral stair 27 metres deep cannot take two-way traffic on a busy afternoon, so you enter at the top and leave at the bottom. From there the underground passage leads one way to the Eastern Grotto. If you want a second look at the top of the well, walk back round through the garden.
The other rule changes how tours work. External guides may not lead groups inside the Palace or the Initiation Well. On any tour, your guide talks in the gardens and you go through the well on your own. Our Initiation Well guide has the route step by step.
| Area | Rule in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Initiation Well | Open, descending only |
| Tunnel well to Eastern Grotto | Open, one way |
| Waterfall Lake path | Closed, no walking at the lake |
| Aquarium | Closed for restoration |
| Palace | Main floor only, one-way route |
| Guides from tour companies | Not allowed inside the palace or the well |
| Chapel and gardens | Open |
Can you visit the upper floors of the Regaleira Palace?
Not this year, as things stand. Only the main floor is open; the upper floors open only while an exhibition is held there.
The foundation's palace notice says the main floor is part of the visit and the upper floors open only during temporary exhibitions. The 2026 exhibition is elsewhere. The Camonian collection of Carvalho Monteiro is in the Casa do Gerador, the old generator house, and runs to the end of December, free with your ticket.
It is an infographic show about Carvalho Monteiro's collection on the poet Luís de Camões, described as the largest and most complete of the 19th century, with illustrations of scenes from Os Lusíadas. Give it fifteen minutes. It explains why the man who built Regaleira filled it with Portuguese epic symbolism.

What can you still see at Quinta da Regaleira in 2026?
Almost everything that made it famous: the Initiation Well, the Unfinished Well, the tunnels, the chapel, the towers and the gardens.
Walk up from the gate and you still pass the Portal of the Guardians, the Terrace of the Celestial Worlds and the Regaleira Tower. The Initiation Well still drops about 27 metres down nine landings. The simpler Unfinished Well is open nearby, and Leda's Grotto, the Chapel of the Holy Trinity and the palace's main floor are on the circuit. The estate is about 4 hectares of steep paths, so wear proper shoes.
Plan two to three hours on your own. The closures shave a few minutes, not more. How long to spend at Regaleira breaks the visit down area by area.
Two hours inside, the ticket included and a private guide in the gardens.
Check dates for the private Regaleira half dayDo the closures change which tour to book?
Not much. The well and tunnels are the main event, and you walk them alone on every tour. Time inside matters more than ever.
Tours spend 60 to 100 minutes at Regaleira. With the one-way well and a queue at the top on busy days, that is tight. The private Regaleira half day gives you two hours with the ticket included. The half day from Sintra ends at Regaleira, so you can stay on after the guide leaves.
On a full-day trip such as the SPR Tours day you get 90 minutes, enough for the well, the tunnels and the chapel if you go straight to them. Skip the palace queue if time runs short. Its upper floors are closed anyway.

Pena's terraces first, then 90 minutes at Regaleira at the end, so you can stay on as long as you like.

Is the Initiation Well open in 2026?
Yes. The Initiation Well is open, but only in the descending direction. You enter at the top and leave through the tunnel at the bottom.
Why can't I cross the stepping stones at Quinta da Regaleira?
The estate has closed the Waterfall Path, and its Portuguese rules ban walking at the Waterfall Lake. You can still see the lake and the stones from the surrounding paths.
When will the Regaleira Aquarium reopen?
The foundation has not given a date. The notice only says the Aquarium is closed while conservation and restoration work takes place.
Is the 2026 exhibition included in the Regaleira ticket?
