How long at Regaleira

Give Regaleira an afternoon, not an hour. It is a hillside of paths and passages, and the best of it is at the top.

Quinta da Regaleira covers about four hectares of steep hillside. The palace is quick. The gardens, towers, grottoes and the Initiation Well are not, and they are what you came for.

Opening hours and rules are from the estate's visitor page for 2026; time on tours is from each listing's itinerary.

The quick answer

Plan two to three hours on your own: an hour for the palace and chapel, an hour or more for the upper gardens and the Initiation Well, plus the queue. Tours give you 60 to 100 minutes. Go at the first slot or after 15:00, avoid summer weekends at midday, and remember the last entry is 17:30 all year.

How long do you need at Quinta da Regaleira?

Two to three hours on your own. Ninety minutes covers the highlights; one hour is a rush.

Most visitors spend between two and three hours, and many stay longer on a quiet day. With a fixed tour clock, 90 minutes gets you through the palace, the chapel and down the well if the queue is short. The all-tickets tour gives one hour, which means choosing: the well or the palace, not both at leisure.

Your ticket lets you stay all day within opening hours, and the café on the garden terrace means you don't have to leave to eat.

What is the best route through Regaleira?

Go uphill first to the Initiation Well while the queue is short, come down through the tunnel and the gardens, and finish at the palace and chapel.

  1. Gate to the upper gardens (15 min). Climb past the Portal of the Guardians and the Regaleira Tower to the top of the well. Take the photo from the edge.
  2. The Initiation Well (15 to 45 min). Queue, descend the nine landings and leave by the one-way tunnel to the Eastern Grotto.
  3. Grottoes and towers (30 min). Leda's Grotto, the Terrace of the Celestial Worlds, the lookout towers. Some paths are closed in 2026, including the Waterfall Path.
  4. Chapel (10 min). Small, carved, with the armillary sphere and the Order of Christ cross in the floor.
  5. Palace (30 min). One-way, main floor only. It closes 30 minutes before the gardens.
  6. Café terrace. A coffee before you walk back to the village.

Reverse it if you arrive late: the palace closes first.

What are the opening hours in 2026?

09:00 to 19:30 from April to September, 10:00 to 18:30 the rest of the year. Last entry is 17:30 in every season.

The palace, chapel and exhibition rooms close 30 minutes before the gardens. The estate closes on 1 January and on 24, 25 and 31 December.

What is the best time of day to visit?

The first slot of the morning or after about 15:00. From late morning to mid-afternoon the tour groups are in.

Most day trips from Lisbon reach Sintra mid-morning, and the half-day tours bring their groups through in the late morning and early afternoon. The well queue peaks with them. In summer the late slots give you the best of both: fewer people and the long evening light, with the gardens open until 19:30.

Book the late slot early. The ones everyone skips are the ones that make the visit. The ticket guide explains how slots and grace work.

Two hours inside with the ticket included, and a private car that waits for you.

What is the best season to visit Regaleira?

Spring and autumn: green gardens, fewer crowds and mild weather. Summer is busiest; winter is quietest but damp.

Sintra has its own weather. The hills catch Atlantic mist, and the estate can sit in cloud while Lisbon is sunny. That is not a reason to cancel: Regaleira in mist is spooky in the best way, and the tunnels feel right. It does mean wet, slippery stone, so bring a layer and shoes with grip.

July and August bring the biggest crowds and the longest well queues. From November to March many weekday mornings are close to empty, and the morning slots rarely sell out.

How long should you plan with kids?

About two hours. Children usually love the well and the tunnels and tire on the steep paths.

Children up to 5 go free, youths 6 to 17 pay EUR 15, and a family ticket for two adults and two youths is EUR 60. The rules say under-15s must stay with an adult, which is sensible: the well's parapets are low and the tunnels are dark. A pushchair is no use on the stairs, so bring a carrier for small children.

Snacks are not allowed on the grounds, so plan a stop at the café. Fountain water is not drinkable; bring a bottle.

The part children remember: a staircase that ends in a tunnel.

Is Quinta da Regaleira accessible?

Only in part. The terrain is steep and uneven, the well is a spiral stair and the tunnels are narrow. Visitors with reduced mobility must be accompanied.

The lower gardens around the palace are the gentlest part. Upper paths are steep, often gravel or worn stone, and the well and the tunnels involve stairs with no alternative route. Visitors with a disability pay EUR 12, with a companion at the same price. Call the estate on (+351) 219 106 650 before you go to ask what is open for your needs.

What if your tour only gives you 60 to 90 minutes?

Head straight for the well, skip the queue for the palace if it is long, and save the chapel for the way out.

With an hour: the well and the tunnel (30 to 40 minutes with a short queue), then the chapel and a look at the palace from outside. With 90 minutes: add the palace main floor. Agree the meeting time with your guide and keep it; the vans don't wait long in the village.

If that sounds too tight, choose a tour with more time. The private half day gives two hours, and the half day from Sintra ends at Regaleira, so you can stay. See Sintra tours that include Regaleira.
